History of Clan Gregor. GD50 = Papers of John McGregor WS at the Scottish Record Office.
The Quaich is a magazine of McGregor history and genealogy published and edited by Sheila
McGregor, 8 Greenhill Place, Edinburgh EH10 4BR.
Gregor McGregor of Glenorchy. Boasting descent from Alpin, king of the Scots who ruled in the year 833 through Griogar
| his third and youngest son and his descendants for five hundred years. It is presumably this Griogar, or Gregor, who
| was the true name-father of the Clan.
'--John "Cham" McGregor of Glenorchy, clearly the same man as Iain Cam (one-eyed), above, even his death date, 19
| April 1390, is the same. However the Dick/Calderwood tree allows him many more children:
|--1. Malcolm. dsp 1420.
|--2. John of Bruckleg (Brackley). (Here the brother of Gregor Aluin rather than his son. Defeated the McNabs
| at Crianlarich. m a daur of the Laird of McLachlan. Ancestor of the McGregors of Glencarrock (=Glencarnoch,
| Glencarnaig - see the tree above, and of the present chiefs of Clan Gregor.
|--3. Several daurs.
|--4. Gillespie Archibald McGregor.
|--5. Patrick McGregor, of whom we have no record beyond his name.
|--6. Gregor "Aulin" (Aluin). d Glenorchy 1413. m Iris daur of Malcolm McAlpin of Finnich.
| |--A. Duncan "Beg" of Roro d 17th Feb 1477. Ancestor of the McGregors of Roro, a line senior to that of Glengyle,
| | and which seem to have died out.
| '--B. Dougal "Ciar". Ancestor of the McGregors of Glengyle. So far there are a few discrepancies between the
| | Dick tree and the authorised version, but in giving the descendants of Dougal Ciar they differ widely. One
| | - perhaps both! - may be partly invention, or perhaps Dougal Ciar had two sons. PD60/92 has Dougal Ciar the fifth
| | son of Gregor Aulin.
| '--Duncan. The AV has Alastair only son of Dougal Ciar, but the Dick tree gives Duncan a noble wife: m Margaret
| | daur of Duncan McFarlane of Arrochar 6th Laird of McFarlane. Believed to be a grand-daughter of King
| | James IV of Scotland. Correspondent P. J. Lawrie points out the severe discrepancy between the dates of
| | James IV's rule and his alleged 2g-grandson Malcolm's outlawry in 1533 - see below - roughly two generations
| | too early. PD60/92 has this Duncan the first in Glengyle.
| '--Dougal McGregor McCoulkeir of Corryarklet in Glenarklet. m a daur of Stewart of Coireachan. Amelia
| | II:250 calls this one Dougal Ciar. PD60/92 calls his father-in-law Stewart of Kymachin.
| |--(i) Malcolm. Outlawed 15th Nov 1533 for harrying the land of the Earl of Menteith. d before Feb
| | | 1590. m Findlay Glas McEantyre.
| | |--a. Dougal Og. In Glengyle as tenant of the Laird of Buchanan. Killed with his son Duncan in a
| | | battle with the Campbells of Glenorchy at Bentoig in April 1804. Issue--> extinct.
| | |--b. Gregor Dubh III of {in} Glengyle. He fought at Glenfruin 1603. m Janet daur of Thomas Buchanan
| | | | of Carbeth. She d 1626. "Gregor Dubh a'Croic". Said to have had nine sons F7. Rev W. A.
| | | | Gilles' In Famed Breadalbane p 134 says `Gregor in Ardchyle was grandfather of Rob Roy'. This
| | | | conflicts with many other accounts. This Gregor was Rob Roy's great grandfather.
| | | |--1. Malcolm "Og" McG (Stewart). Besieged on an island in Loch Katrine 1611. Living 1630. `This
| | | | | Callum, while a young man, was implicated in an outrage on the property, and an attempt
| | | | | to carry off the person, of an heiress in Strathtay; and having failed to appear at Perth
| | | | | to answer for his conduct he was outlawed". Later he was pardoned. He was m(1) a daur of
| | | | | the laird of McFarlane, whom he repudiated, and m(2) a lady of the house of Keppoch. Headed
| | | | | his tribe at the Battle of Glenfruin. Took some hundreds of Gregarach to Aberdeenshire around
| | | | | 1622, where some of them settled, and were later visited by Rob Roy trying to recruit them
| | | | | for the '15 rising. Forbes has this Callum an elder son of Dougal Keir (p70), but the dates
| | | | | would seem to make this impossible.
| | | | |--A. Donald "Glas". V In Glengyle. Lt Col in King James VII's Scottish army. Imprisoned after
| | | | | | the battle of Killiekrankie until 31 October 1691. Bur Fortingall after June 1693. m (Kenmore
| | | | | | Nov 1656) Margaret (d1691) daur of William Campbell of Glenfalloch (Duneaves, Taineagh),
| | | | | | the third son of Sir Robert Campbell 9th Laird of Glenorchy and Isobel daur of Sir Lauchlan
| | | | | | McKintosh of Dunachron. d Aug 1724 at Muirlaggan, Loch Voil. However, F49 says Margaret
| | | | | | was the daughter of Archibald Campbell of Glenlyon d 1640 and Jean daur of Sir Robert
| | | | | | Campbell. This Jean m(2) (1647) Patrick Roy, Laird of McGregor with issue James and Alexander,
| | | | | | and m (3) Duncan Stewart 8th of Appin. This latter version agrees with W. H. Murray's
| | | | | | Rob Roy.
| | | | | |--(i) John McConnel Glas VI in Glengyle. b 1658/58. Commanded a watch in 1691. d 1700.
| | | | | | | m(1) daur of Drummond of Comrie who dsp. m(2) Christian (?d1720) daur of John Campbell
| | | | | | | of Duneaves (Amelia has `Duncaved on p510'). F4 has this `Christane' the relict of Patrick
| | | | | | | Campbell in Corricharnick - the marriage contract dated 1687. Gregor McGregor wadsetter
| | | | | | | in Ardmakmuine, Gregor Roy McG in Kyllichrae, Malcolm McGregor in Invernentie, and Gregor
| | | | | | | McG wadsetter of Portnellan were cautioners.
| | | | | | |--a. Gregor "Ghlun Dhu" of Glengyle, b 1688 or 9. Alias James Graham. Bought the lands of
| | | | | | | | Glengyle in 1703. With McGregor of Glencarrock (Glencarnock?) was joint colonel
| | | | | | | | of the McGregor regiment in 1745. d 27 Aug 1777 & bur at Glengyle. m Mary daur of
| | | | | | | | Hamilton of Bardowie. `Educated liberally' (says Inverhadden) by the care of his uncle Rob
| | | | | | | | Roy McG of Graigerostan and Innersnaid. Much praised for his conduct in the '45.

| | | | | | | | | the family he greatly improved his estate, which had been much encumbered in
| | | | | | | | | consequence of the spirited exertions of his father...' in the '45.

| | | | | | | | | |--b. John Daniel b p Callander 10 Aug 1821- appears to have d young (J.McG WS).
| | | | | | | | | | | However - the John Daniel McGregor who died in Doune in 1917 aged 95 years
| | | | | | | | | | | looks very like this one. Known in the family as J.D. he had a very successful
| | | | | | | | | | | undertaking business in Greenock and retired at 40. Lost money buying and
| | | | | | | | | | | selling houses, and died in Doune in a small house overlooking the churchyard.
| | | | | | | | | | | Lundin gives a death date of 1854 but no issue.
| | | | | | | | | | | He (the one in Doune)had 3 children listed below, Following is from Lundin file 11.
| | | | | | | | | | |GLENGYLE FAMILIES - DR WARD'S CHART: John's computer printout was particularly
| | | | | | | | | | |helpful, but he was mistaken, as was the Glasgow Herald article of 3 June 1926,
| | | | | | | | | | |in deciding that JOHN DANIEL MACGREGOR born 10 Aug 1821, brother of JAMES born
| | | | | | | | | | |1 Aug 1818 and GREGOR born 27 Sep 1824, died young. He was clearly the JOHN
| | | | | | | | | | |shown in the 1851 Census as farming on Glengyle aged 29. John Ward refers to
| | | | | | | | | | |another JOHN DANIEL from Doune, (who died there aged 95 in 1917) but this
| | | | | | | | | | |was a different man. I have now (May 1997) located the death of JOHN DANIEL
| | | | | | | | | | |at Glengyle House, Loch-Katrine-side on 23 Jan 1854, reported in the Stirling
| | | | | | | | | | |Observer of 2 Feb 1854. John's chart shows and I have no reason to doubt this,
| | | | | | | | | | |the two brothers/hotel-keepers, JAMES who bought Glengyle in 1855 or 1860, and
| | | | | | | | | | |DONALD from Edinburgh, were sons of COLIN, the illegitimate son of ROBIN OIG,
| | | | | | | | | | |one of ROB ROY's sons - i.e. they were grandsons of ROBIN OIG MACGREGOR,
| | | | | | | | | | |hanged perhaps unjustly for the alleged abduction of Jean Keay. From
| | | | | | | | | | |Dr.Ward's chart, the JAMES who bought Glengyle in 1860 (or 1855?) had a
| | | | | | | | | | |daughter JEMIMA born 1843, died 1933, so he is the JAMES buried at Glengyle
| | | | | | | | | | |with his daughter, shown in the Memorial Inscriptions as IDA JEMINA,
| | | | | | | | | | |b. 17.9.1843 d. 30.4.1933. In a letter of 22 Dec 1993 he suggests the stone
| | | | | | | | | | |could be for JAMES born 1 Aug 1818 and his possible daughter, but this is not so.
